Madonna’s 15-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon appears to already have picked up a bad nicotine habit after she was pictured smoking a cigarette on Friday. The eldest daughter of the Material Girl was seen puffing away as she loitered around with male friends in New York. She had the cigarette in her hand as a pal lighted it for her and seemed very comfortable with it. The legal age for smoking in America is 18.
Wearing a black and white mini dress with matching shoes, the 10th grade schoolgirl wore dark shades and her long hair loosely around her shoulders. At one point she even sneakily tried to hide the cigarette in her hand by holding it upside down as she walked along.
Lourdes is following in her mother’s footsteps in many ways including her passion for fashion with the family’s clothing line Material Girl. But as Madonna was seen seductively posing with a cigarette in her latest music video Girl Gone Wild, it appears it may be a bad habit picked up closer to home.
Madonna’s rep had denied the singer had started smoking again after pictures surfaced of her with what looked like a cigarette in hand while shooting her movie W.E. in 2010. But regardless of whether the 53-year-old was just posing with it or does still smoke, it may not be the best example to set for her four children.
Lourdes will reportedly join her mother’s backing dancers when she kicks off her 50-country world tour in Israel in May.
‘It is the first time Lourdes will have appeared on stage with her mum,’ says a source. ‘There are risqué dancers and some blatantly sexual dance routines – but Madonna is really excited about Lourdes making an appearance.’

I was wondering about Madonna smoking too – her latest video for “Girl Gone Wild” is full of cigarette smoking. I remember that Madonna used to smoke, like, way back in the day, but I wasn’t aware that she was still doing it, or back to it. So maybe Lola got her cigs from Madge? I hope Madge nips this in the bud… although… Lola has at times seemed “too grown-up” for her age for several years now. When she was 13 years old, she was wearing pot-motif’d clothing, and when she was 14, she already had dyed hair, a face-full of makeup and her own press conferences for her fashion line. This girl has grown up very fast, and Madonna seems okay with it so far.

Just because you did it when you were 10 doesn’t make it okay. Smoking kills, and to start so early is an awful idea. But everyone knows that, so I’m not here to preach.
Smoking at 10? That is certainly something to be proud of and to encourage young girls to emulate. Not.
When did Annony encourage anyone to do anything or say she was proud of it? She stated facts about her life. Most kids have tried smoking at that age. I smoked at 15 too. Quit 2 years later because I decided it just wasn’t worth the hassle and I knew what health problems it could cause eventually. I agree. There are WAY worse things she could be doing. Smoking isn’t even in the top 10.

Honestly, we all did stupid things when we were teenagers. But, I really feel for her that her every move is photographed and scrutinized. I am sure she will be punished by her parents for smoking so there is no need to beat up a 15 yr. old KID in the press.

I was 15 when I started smoking “socially.” It turned into a habit for me and I didn’t quit until I was 27. My only reaction to this is it reminded me of the MANY times I tried to quit and regretted the day I started. Took me 2-3 yrs of throwing full packs away (among other quit methods) before I finally did. God, it’s soooo hard to quit. Ugh. I’ll shut up now. But I feel sorry or teens who start smoking bc they have no idea what a PITA habit it is to shake.
I was 16 and didn’t quit until I was 34. Then it took me 2 years until I was consistently smoke free. I’m hoping her mother will do something to keep her from starting, because it is incredibly hard to quit. That said, I’m sure there will be a lot of bad habits on that tour. I hope she doesn’t end up with some she later regrets.
My story is similar to yours: started smoking socially at 12, full on habit by 15, and didn’t quit until I was 23. Best thing I ever did. I hope Lourdes doesn’t make a habit of it because smoking is so awful and it ruins your skin and voice. Not to mention cancer is a real bitch. I was surprised Madonna was still smoking. The problem with smoking vs. doing other stupid things as a teenager is that (studies show) kids who smoke find it much harder to quit than those who start as adults. Too bad she didn’t pick a different stupid “thing.”

I try not to be judgmental of parents and kids, so all I’ll say is that I hope Lourdes doesn’t get too addicted and gives smoking up soon. Having said that I’m floored that the majority of commentators are dismissing something as dangerous as smoking as “no big deal” when I’ve seen plenty of other celebrity kids and parents crucified for much more trivial things.
Exactly! Smoking is serious and bad. People are acting very nonchalant about it. My 2 year old is starting to mime smoking because my step dad smokes. Of course he’s trying to blame tv commercials and not that fact that she sees him smoking a lot, we don’t visit as much because of it and i hate hugging her and smelling smoke because he smokes outside and comes right back inside and picks her up. Yuck! Smoking is gross and bad and with so much knowledge out there I don’t understand why people continue to start at all.
We smoke mainly because we can, and often times the health risks don’t weigh up the alleviation of mental pressures a cigarette provides.

in my state it is not illegal to smoke while under 18. it is, however, illegal to purchase tobacco under the age of 18. so while Lourdes cannot legally buy a pack of smokes, she can actually smoke a cigarette. Now, whomever supplied her with the cigarette would be considered to be breaking the law.

My dad is an oncologist. I grew up hearing about lung and skin cancer (and sometimes seeing gory, gruesome slides from presentations he was giving). This week there was an obit in the paper of a woman who is 32. She was a patient of my dad’s (who put off seeing a doctor b/c she thought she just had a bad smoker’s cough). She died of lung cancer, left 2 young kids behind.
Sorry, but I’m just not inclined to be dismissive about a kid who starts smoking at 15.
I agree. My younger brother (32)just had his foot amputated. He has a lot of health issues, but the doctors told him that smoking exacerbated all of his other ailments greatly. I don’t really care about what Lourdes does. But I have heard that there has been a huge resurgence in teen smoking. Nasty habit that is so difficult to stop.
I remember the smokers from high school were called “The Smokestack Gang” because they stood on a corner that was not school property and smoked before and after class. A lot of them continued to smoke past their teen years (some still smoke to this day), which I think is probably normal for such an addictive habit.
One of the most disgusting things I’ve ever heard was a woman’s smoker’s cough. I think she had emphysema and it was just these long, phlegmy hacks.
But you can’t tell a teenager anything.

It doesn’t HAVE to be a big deal but it could be. My best friend and I decided that since we were starting high school in the fall that we needed to be “cool.” I don’t know how we each got ahold of packs of Marlboro but we did. I stood in my basement stairwell and lit up. I even inhaled and blew smoke out my nose….so cool, right. I didn’t get sick. But it stunk and my fingers stunk. I thought this is totally stupid and dropped the pack in the mailbox by my house. But my best friend kept smoking and was a chain smoker by 11th grade. So it can go either way, I guess. That doesn’t make me better than my friend or smarter. I guess I didn’t have the addictive “thing” in my brain for cigarettes. I hope this pretty girl doesn’t get hooked. I have been told it SUCKS to try to quit.
I’m not surprised that she’s smoking at 15, just shows she does have moments of being a regular teenager. What I’m surprised about is if Madonna allows this; remember, this woman claims her children don’t watch tv and eat foods that only she approves. Then again, that was back when she was married to Guy, now that she’s too busy messing around with 20 year olds, she probably doesn’t care anymore since she needs to be the “cool mom”.
Why would you think she allowed it? She was at school with friends. Madonna just said she is bringing Lola on tour with her this summer because she is 15 and needs to keep an eye on her. Though she acted like Lola would be working backstage with the costumes, not out front dancing. She said Lola hates attention and
didn’t even want credit on the album for backing vocals on a song.

so whatever she wanted to do. The last tour it was so cute, the very last show Lola played the piano whole mom sang a song, and she and Rocco danced on stage with the dancers I’n the closing number.
I used to mimic smoking as a kid and then started full-time at 14. My parents both smoked in the house, in the car, while I was in the womb. It was not something that I thought was bad when I started.
I smoked until I was 31. The day after my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer. She died a year later. I have been smoke free for almost 3 years.
I know its what kids do and we all just assume that Madonna is ok with it. She very well may not be. Lourdes could be getting grounded from these photos as we speak! I think with a lot of teens starting smoking, its a rite of passage and something that people get over. I was the last of my friends that started at the same time as me to quit.
I tried it at fifteen around the corner from school with friends who were smoking. After three days of trying to be cool I gave up. I hated it.
I hope this is what Lourdes does. She is to young and healthy to be smoking. What a shame to see such a pretty girl do something so ugly & stupid. Its beneath her.

Lifelong smokers often start when they are teens and don’t have the best judgment. But many of us have relatives and friends who smoked and later paid dearly. There are enough cancer and emphysema patients to show you what can happen down the road. Smart people learn not only from their mistakes, but from other people’s mistakes, too.
Both of my parents and my older brother smoked, I didn’t. My brother quit in his late 20s but my parents continued to smoke despite my working in pulmonary medicine. By then I realized you have to want to quit inherently because someone pressuring you just isn’t enough. My mom finally quit when she was on vacation because there was a really long wait for the smoking section of a restaurant; when she went cold turkey for 24-hours my dad quit because he was not going to be put to shame that mom had more willpower. Ironically, the day they came back (1 week smoke free), my Aunt was diagnosed with lung cancer – that was the scare that got my Aunt and Uncle to quit.
Oh yeah, and I should point out that the one person in the family that never smoked, is the only one who developed pulmonary issues (like many non-smoking children, I had damage to my small airways from second hand smoke and became an asthmatic in my early 30s)

My brother and I had childhood asthma because my dad was a smoker. He finally quit after his father died of emphysema from a lifelong nicotine addiction.
People who start smoking really need to get it into their heads that they’re not just risking their health, they are risking the health of their loved ones.
@Minty – in a very weird way, developing asthma was actually a very good thing. I’d been doing clinical research including work on asthma some time prior to having any symptoms & being diagnosed so there were a few things I suddenly had a really good understanding of having experienced them first hand and it actually improved my ability to develop better programs. I consider it a weird little blessing (except on days like today when I wish I could reach in & scratch the inside of my lungs)

Why is it so hard to believe her son doesn’t smoke? I didn’t as a teen and had a group of good friends that didn’t either. Not everyone falls into bad habits.
On another forum I visit, I just read about a member whose mother has been diagnosed with COPD and she doesn’t have enough breath to talk or even go to the bathroom. They had to move a commode next to her bed. This is what smokers have to look forward to when they’re older (and this woman is only in her 60s), unless they’re extremely lucky.
A lot of teens give into peer pressure and start smoking — I’m sure I would’ve as well, except I was asthmatic thanks to my dad’s smoking so lighting up made me wheeze — but they usually aren’t confronted with quite as many temptations as Lourdes.
The bigger issue is that, as Madonna’s daughter, I’m sure there are lots of people — sycophants, offspring of other celebs, rich classmates — that freely offer her access to hard drugs. If she’s weak enough to start smoking, she’s going to be easy prey.
Madonna had better pull herself together and stop acting like she’s her daughter’s age, so she can focus on helping Lourdes avoid the pitfalls of being a celebrity kid.

Mothers who smoke tend to have kids who smoke. Demi Moore’s kids smoke because both Demi andd Bruce do (so does Ashton). I don’t know if Reece Witherspoon smokes, but her new husband does, so I imagine we’ll see her kids puffing away. Julia Roberts’ kids definitely will. The Jolie-Pitts will probably be half and half since Brad smokes like a fiend and Angie only smokes heroin and meth (KIDDING!). Smokers start young. Most adult smokers will tell you they started as young teens.
Here’s a novel idea: smoking is just as, if mot more, lethal as hard drugs. In the UK the NHS spends £££s on anti-smoking adverts and millions treating those stupid enough to smoke who now have cancer. No, you’re not alone in this, and i have read others commenters agree with you ( and me). I think too, that she is a pretty, but in an average kind of way. NOt only that: i read, sometime, that Madonna has never been ” beautiful ” like her daughter. When I was a teenager, I never got the urge to experiment with cigarettes and alcohol. My friends tried to pressure me but I stood my ground and never felt like I needed to do stupid things just to fit in or be cool. But then I started reading grown up books since I was 7 and knew what will happen if you smoked and my family is in the medical field so growing up, I heard a lot of horror stories about smoking and drinking. In my opinion, if kids were brought up properly, they wouldn’t try to do silly and harmful things. Unless they are just plain stupid.

I know many kids who used to say smoking kills, cancer, and all the health implications (btw there are warnings on the packets as well, it’s not like they are clueless), then give it a couple of years and they are puffing away on cigarettes and experimenting. Some people don’t try out smoking and that’s fine, and some do, and that’s fine as well. But I am 100% that most teenagers know the health implications, they just do it anyway. Doesn’t make them the exceptionally stupid. Do you know many sane, unrebellious, attitude-free, hormone-free teenagers? I definately do not.
My parents used to tell me all the time that smoking kills, how your lungs turn black, how your Alveolis get tar, and shrink, and all the gruesome intimate details of what happens when you smoke. I still smoked when I was a teen. It happens, you rebel.
I find it funny if a celebrity parent is seen smoking the outrage but when Lourdes is smoking at 15 it’s fine and no big deal.

I tried my first cigarette when I was 13, with a friend who had started in third grade. Even I was appalled by that, but it goes to show how hard it is to quit. I finished that cigarette and never touched another. She’s just experimenting.
My sister started smoking at the age of 13 and said she was just checking it out.
She’s in her 20’s and still smokes.

that’s why lots of people can’t seem to quit. Drinking is worse than smoking hands down!!!! So hopefully she’s not downing shots and blacking out yet.

I guess I feel pretty nochalent about this because I sometimes smoked socially in my teens but it just never turned into a habit for me even though it had ample opportunity to do so and even though I have an addictive personality. I haven’t smoked for years. Lourdes is most likely just experimenting. I’d be MUCH more worried at this stage if I found out she was drinking regularly – smoking is super unhealthy and there are cancer risks etc, but isn’t mind altering and won’t put someone’s life in a rapid downhill spiral like other addictions can. Not to make light of the cancer factor or anything but there is a reason why recovering drug and alcohol addicts are often still allowed to smoke. Cigarettes won’t turn you into a soulless zombie.
If she was smoking in the school grounds though – I hope she got detention!

it’s a good thing this girl has money because if she was a “normal” girl she would be so much uglier without her fancy clothes and makeup, and she wouldn’t have had insurance to fix her teeth.
She will seriously be sorry if she goes down the horrible smoking road. Almost impossible to quit for sure. And you always smell nasty!

I wonder sometimes if there is any connection between ADHD and kids who start smoking at a young age. I heard somewhere that nicotine is similar at a molecular level to ADHD medications.
